About Fiona

My experience of supporting families comes from being a mother myself, a Doula and a Norland Nursery Nurse

Fiona’s Story

I am married with three boys, Hamish, Torquil and Lachlann and a whippet.  I live in the small village near Towcester in Northamptonshire.

I trained as a Norland Nursery nurse in 1985 and particularly worked with mothers and newborn babies at home and at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital in London.

A few years later I had a change in career and trained in fashion design, something I have always loved.  I worked in the fashion industry for Amanda Wakeley for seven years and then had my own design business working with private clients. I loved the creative side of working. In addition to my own business, in 1997 I joined with The Baby List Company to set up Babylist Maternity Wear with them, designing maternity wear collections which we sold from their showroom in London.

Becoming a parent

I then married my husband Jamie who was in the British Army, which meant a lot of moving and also living abroad including the Falkland Islands, Cyprus and Oman. I had my three boys and loved, and still love, the experience of being a Mother.

I didn’t know about Doulas when we had the boys. It would have meant so much to me to have had the consistent support of the same person to guide me and be there for us.   Later when a friend mentioned the role of the Doula to me I knew this was something I would love to do.

When my husband left the Army and, at last, we were in one place.  I decided that I could begin my Doula journey and so I did The Birth Bliss Aspiring Doula Foundation Course in September 2016 and was trained by Kicki Hansard who is well known in the world of Childbirth Education. I then went on to do my Hypnobirthing Practitioner training and work with groups and individuals with the main aim of helping them have a positive birth experience.

What clients say…

We absolutely adore Fiona. We both felt so safe and well cared for during the births and I'm certain it wouldn't have gone so well if she hadn't been there. Having a doula helping you in the weeks post birth will be the best decision you ever make. Fiona was not only great company, but a fantastic cook as well as brilliant at entertaining our two year old. When you have those tough nights of little to no sleep, to know that Fiona was coming in the morning made it much more bearable. I was able to catch up on a few hours sleep in between feeds and come downstairs to a tidy house, a happy toddler, sleeping/settled baby and lunch on the hob. Literally the best feeling ever.

Having Fiona as my Doula was a vital support for me and helped to enable me having the natural birth that I dreamed for. I am grateful for my son having a gentle start into his life and me having an empowering and strong experience. I am forever thankful to Fiona, no words can even describe that.

Julia

Fiona’s presence was so calming and helpful. It was great to have someone else during the birth which I feel could have been very intense without this support.

As the Dad I appreciated having Fiona with us both during the birth and afterwards as a postnatal doula.  It made such a difference to be able to concentrate on our new baby without having to worry about anything else.

What a Woman – An Outstanding Doula and wonderful lady.  Despite having severe tokophobia and opting for a planned C-section, Fiona was incredible throughout.  She brought such calm to such a tricky time – breathing techniques, cuddles and even homemade snacks.  She helped with breastfeeding afterwards and kept in touch.  Could not recommend enough!

I'll be forever thankful for you being my doula during my first birth. Thank you Fiona for all the good words, the warm hands and your calm presence during the birth of my first son. I experienced the natural birth as wonderful as I hoped and your presence during this extraordinary time helped me a lot. I would recommend every woman to find herself a doula for her birth, as this birth only happens once. It matters.
I decided last minute to search for a doula and it was great to meet Fiona. You always need to meet first before deciding and you will know if this is the right person for you or not. For me, Fiona was the perfect company during the long hours of birth. Having her support made the birth of my son an experience that I'll always love to remember.

Fiona’s calming yet proactive approach swiftly shifted our home to a relaxed haven for recovery and renewal following the birth of my daughter. She has helped me with difficulties with breastfeeding, kept our family nourished and hydrated, the house clean and tidy, reassured me with tips on the practicalities of newborn care, helped my toddler adjust to life with a baby sister and even enabled my husband to take a well earned rest too! Her standards in everything she does are second to none and I can’t recommend her post natal doula service enough.”

Claire

My husband and I would love to recommend Fiona as a Doula for anyone who is looking for a nice and caring person.  She was literally our guide throughout my pregnancy and afterwards.  She was very helpful at all times and especially when things became very complicated for us.  I enjoyed her Hypnobirthing recordings and our Zoom sessions as well.  We learnt so much from her.  We definitely felt confident about what to do when my labour started and progressed and it meant we could look forward to seeing our little one.  Thank you again!
